11 Tors Challenge – Dartmoor Search & Rescue Charity Event 2021
11 Tors Challenge 2021
The Dartmoor Search & Rescue Teams (DS&RT) consist of volunteers who regularly provide assistance to those who get lost or injured on Dartmoor National Park and the surrounding areas. They are supported by public donations and organised charity events.
Dan Shadbolt, a Nuclear Engineer at NESC, regularly hikes within areas that are covered by the DS&RT and has been fortunate enough not to require their services, however others are often not so lucky. When Dan became aware of this year’s event, he immediately signed up to the 11 miles / 11 Tors challenge to return the support and good work carried out by the tireless DS&RT.
This year’s 11 Tors challenge took place on Sunday 18th September, starting and finishing at the National Park Visitors Centre at the heart of Princetown village. The weather on the day was a mixed bag but overall remained favourable making the hike very enjoyable.
Prior to the event participants were given a welcome pack via email highlighting the route, Points of Interest and which Tors were to be visited, listed below:
- South Hessary Tor
- Crazy Well Pool
- Black Tor
- Leeden Tor
- Ingra Tor
- Fur Tor
- King’s Tor
- Foggintor Quarry
- Hollow Tor
- Rundlestone Tor
- North Hessary Tor
Members of the DS&RT were spread around the route to document each person/team’s progress and also to ensure all were safe and accounted for on completion of the event.
There were over 500 participants spread across all ages and abilities; many were also accompanied by their four-legged friends who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the day!
All funds raised from the event go toward purchasing specialist equipment and maintenance of assistance vehicles required to best provide an essential service, free of charge, to members of the public. Please see the following link to find out more about the DS&RT and the excellent work they do:
