I previously spent around ten years working as a chef in the hotel and restaurant industry before making a complete career change by completing both a BSc in Environmental Science and an MSc in Environmental Geochemistry. I pursued this career change in search of a better work–life balance that would allow me to spend more time with my wife and children while developing a fulfilling career. My time at university enabled me to develop skills in complex problem-solving, data analysis, regulatory frameworks, and fundamental scientific principles. Although these skills were environmentally focused, they are highly transferable to a career in nuclear safety.

I was drawn to NESC because they offer a comprehensive training programme that allows people with varied STEM backgrounds to transition into careers in the nuclear safety industry. Since joining NESC, I have benefited from a high level of support from the experienced multidisciplinary team, as well as encouragement to participate in Continuing Professional Development opportunities. I have particularly enjoyed developing my understanding of the nuclear sector through site visits and client engagement at nuclear-licensed sites, covering both submarine reactor safety and uranium enrichment and tails processing. I’m looking forward to a long and rewarding career at NESC and to being part of the significant nuclear safety projects the company is managing.
